Abstract:
This laboratory manual was prepared in response, to the training
needs of the Plant Pathology Staff of the Awasa/Areka Research
Center in connection with the World Bank-funded Enset pathology
Project for which the author served as consultant £01' iO-lMfi KiOntilS;
from September 15, 1993 to July 15, 1994.
Specifically the absence of a useful and handy reference at the
Center on the routine techniques for studying plant pathogenic
bacteria and fungi and plant parasitic nematodes prompted the author
to prepare this manual.
The various techniques and guidelines included in the manual have
been carefully selected to give the pathologists of the Center an
appreciation of the minimum techniques which starting plant
pathologists have to know and fully comprehend.
The choice of subject matters included in the manual has been
largely drawn from the author’s long experience as a teacher of and
researcher in plant pathology and his experiences as Plant
Pathologist of the Enset pathology Project which was first funded by
the African Development Bank (July 1990 to October 1992) and later
by the World Bank.
It is hoped that the manual will prove to be useful reference
material not only for the pathologists of the Awasa/Areka Research
Center but also to pathologists of IAR's other Research Centers.
