Abstract:
Actual pests and potential pests of coffee and the various beneficial insects are
described below under their respective Orders.
Most of the pests described in this bulletin are of very minor importance in
Ethiopia. In other countries such as Kenya and Tanzania, however, they may cause
very serious damage. This is because at present in Ethiopia the pests are wellcontrolled
by their natural enemies, parasites and predators. If however, there is
any great change in local agronomic practices (e.g. shade reduction, spraying with
fungicide, etc.), there may well be unexpected changes in the natural biological balance.
No alteration therefore should be made in local cultural practices except on the
basis of expert advice from research scientists and experienced field officers. Other,
wise it is very easy to change unimportant pest into a very serious and damaging one
