Abstract:
The study was conducted by a multinational and interdisciplinary team of five scientists in
a collaborative programme between the International Centre for development-oriented
Research in Agriculture (ICRA) in the Netherlands, and both the Institute for Agricultural
Research (IAR) and Alemayu University of Agriculture (AUA), Ethiopia. Terms of reference
for research within two districts of Western Hararghe zone were formulated by each of the
host institutions in addition to the regional Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) and zonal
Administration. These included,
• to assess the dissemination and use of improved sorghum cultivars in Miesso distr ict
(IAR),
• to provide recommendations for research appropriate to specific farming systems in
the highlands in Chiro district (AUA),
• to evaluate the performance of research-extension linkages and technology delivery
within Western Hararghe zone (MoA), and,
• to compare farmers’ indigenous practices and innovations with the technologies
developed by research (zonal Administration).
