Abstract:
i These proposals for the Jijiga Livestock Project have been prepared
in the form of an application by the Imperial Ethiopian
Government (IEG) to the International Development Association
(IDA) for an IDA credit to assist in the financing of livestock
proj ecto
ii The project area includes cultivated land and rangeland in the
Jijiga, Gursum, and Degabur Awrajas of Harer province in Eastern

Ethiopiao The project area covers about 35,000 km of land,
and has a human population of about 75,000 families, and a
livestock population of about 600,000 cattle, 900,000 sheep,
400,000 goats and 200,000 camels*
iii The major aims of the project are to:-
(a) To increase the value bf livestock marketed from the project
area-
(b) To raise the incomes of the small farmers and pastoralists
in the project area0
(c) To ley the foundations for the sound future development of
the livestock economy of the project area»
(d) To demonstrate and evaluate the efficiency of the various
components of the project as methods o$ developing the
range lands of Ethiopiao
iv The components of the project include
(a) A programme for land-use planning and range management0
(b) A programme to develop water supplies0
(c) A veterinary programme„
(d) A breed-improvement programme«
(e) A stocker-feeder programme0
(f) A programme of studies and trialso
(g) A training and information programme,,
(h) A road-development programmee
(i) Project-management and common services»
In addition to these components of the project, the proposals
include the provision of certain auxiliary facilities common to this
project and to two other livestock projects which are expected to
commence at the same time.
