Abstract:
This report describes and discusses the methodology, results,
findings and recommendations of a land use and land cover, production
regions, and farming systems inventory of Ethiopia, carried out during the
period 1979-1982.
The results of the land use and land cover inventory are presented
on a 1:1M coloured map. The section gives information on the major and
co-dominant land-using activities, major crops and/or natural cover
types, major livestock types, and on what proportion of the country is
occupied by each of the mapping units. The latter information is
presented on the national basis as well as on the regional and provincial
levels, the two lower administrative levels. The section also gives
information, at the three administrative levels, on the areal extents
and percentages of land under annual crops, perennial crops, forests
and dense bushlands, other wooded areas, currently unproductive land,
and currently unutilizable land.
The production regions information is presented on fifteen 1:4M
diazo maps as follows (1) Teff, (2) Sorghum (3) Maize (4] Barley
(5) Wheat (6 ) Finger Millet and Seasame seed (7) Noug (8 ) Horse
Beans and Haricot Beans, (9) Chick Peas, (10) Peas, (11) Lentils,
(12) Linseed, Irrigated Cotton and Groundnuts, (13) Coffee,
(14) Ensete and (15) Mixed Farming, Pastoral Areas and Forested Areas.
The farming systems section gives information on management
practices: ploughing, seeding, crop rotation, terracing, intercropping,
fallow systems and manuring. It also gives information on produce
storage.
